- This page will be regularly updated as we plan and prepare for Eating Disorders Awareness Week 2024 (26th February – 3rd March 2024). More details to follow.
The theme for #EDAW2024 is ‘Eating Disorder Recovery and Beyond: Respecting individuality and identity‘. We understand that an eating disorder develops and functions differently for each individual person. Over time it can become a part of a persons identity, and can become intertwined with the persons sense of self. We recognise that what it means to recover is unique to each person. A person-centred approach is crucial to validate and recognise these individual experiences and to ensure that each person feels heard and supported, every step of the way.

The webinar, being delivered by the multidisciplinary Eating Disorders Programme team at SPMHS, is being held to mark Eating Disorders Awareness Week (EDAW) 2024. It takes place on:
- Wednesday, 28 February between 6pm and 7.30pm.
Leah Hargadon, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) Therapist, and Laura Griffin, Occupational Therapist, will present on eating disorder recovery and the sense of fragility a person may feel following an eating disorder. They will look at ways of building a positive sense of identity after such a mental health difficulty.
Dr Gary Cooney, Consultant Psychiatrist in Eating Disorders, and Dr Bernadette Kevin, Senior Registrar in Psychiatry, will then present on the recognition or detection of eating disorders. Despite increasing awareness of eating disorders, early detection remains a challenge, especially where individuals don’t fit typical or classical presentations. This will involve looking at ways to deepen our understanding of how to identify illness, which – in the context of society’s focus on diet, weight and fitness – may go unnoticed for quite some time. We will look particularly at under-represented groups in eating disorders and consider some of the obstacles to treatment that exist, relating to themes of identity and individuality.
This webinar is suitable for a general audience and anyone working in healthcare environments.
