Exploring Predictors of Orthorexia in Exercisers: Perfectionism, Body Image, Social Media and Vulnerability to Disease *Now closed*

Note: As of July 2024, this study is closed.

Postgraduate researcher Robyn Jones is currently completing research investigating perfectionism, body image disturbance, social media addiction and perceived vulnerability to disease as potential predictors of orthorexia in people who exercise.

Background, aims and title of the study

The study aims to answer the following questions:

  1. Will high scores of perfectionism predict high scores of orthorexia?
  2. Will high scores of body image disturbance predict high scores of orthorexia?
  3. Will high scores of social media addiction be a predictor of high scores on orthorexia nervosa?
  4. Will high scores of perceived vulnerability to disease  be a predictor of high scores of orthorexia?

The study will be investigating these questions in a sample of individuals who reach the minimum level of moderate activity as set out by the World Health Organisation as instances of orthorexia have been found to be higher in those who exercise.
