Exploring Attitudes towards skin tone and Appearance Anxiety in Women living in Ireland

Background & Aims:

The research project explores the phenomenon of skin tone dissatisfaction, which is usually defined as the discrepancy between current skin tone and desired skin tone. Skin tone dissatisfaction can vary across ethnic groups, and is linked to body dissatisfaction and appearance anxiety. Skin tone dissatisfaction is associated with harmful cosmetic practices in women, including skin bleaching and lightening among those seeking a lighter complexion, and risky tanning behaviours among those desiring a darker skin tone. Therefore, this study aims to investigate how skin tone dissatisfaction is related to body dissatisfaction and appearance anxiety in women living in Ireland.

Study Format:

  • Duration: 10-minute anonymous online survey
  • Eligibility:
    • Women aged 18+
    • Currently living in Ireland
    • Able to read and write in English

This study has been approved by the Dublin Business School Research Ethics Committee (PY2425 – 156).
